Connect a USB External Hard Disk Drive to a Wireless Router

By Sara Omran

Many modern wireless and wired routers include a port for USB that allows the connection of webcams, printers and even external disk drives. You can share these connections on the local area network. The connection of an external USB disk drive to your internet router enables all the wireless and wired computers to get access to your hard disk for retrieving files or for storage of important data.

Connecting and sharing your hard disk drive

Step 1
First of all connect the AC adapter to your external USB hard disk drive and then connect it to your household power supply.

Step 2
Now plug the large and flat end of your USB cable into the USB port given on the back side of your router and the other mini-plug adapter end of the USB cable into the port given on the side of your external disk drive. The port on the back side of router is often named as "Connect USB", "SharePort" or anything similar.

Step 3
If your device has a power switch and an AC adapter, turn on your external hard disk drive.

Step 4
Now open your browser. You can use Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or any other suitable browser for this purpose. In the address bar, type the IP address and press the "Enter" button. Now using the administrator's password and username, login your router. If you have no knowledge about your default IP address, password and username for the Wi-Fi router, you can refer to the owner's manual or user guide for this important information.

Step 5
Make a click on the USB port tab from the control panel of your router. Depending on the kind of router you use, the USB port tab might be named as "Network Attached Storage (NAS)", "Storage" or "USB Devices". However, sometimes routers label their USB ports with the same name that they use for connection.

Step 6
Now verify that the name of device for your external hard disk drive is shown in the list of the connected USB drives. Restart or reboot your router if the device name is not displayed in the list of automatically connected USB disk drives. You can easily find the "Restart" or "Reboot" button or link on the "Advanced Settings" or "Advanced" tab. After you restart the router, your device should automatically detect the hard disk and display it in the list of USB drives.

Step 7
Click on the "Share this Device" or "Create Share" button next to the name of your hard disk. The router then creates or makes a share for your USB disk and displays the IP address in the list of devices. You can click on the "Format Disk" or "Format" button if you wish to erase all data on it. Otherwise, select "Save Settings" to store the configuration changes. Now you can exit the control panel of your router after changing the settings.
