Criteria to Judge When Buying a Laptop

Advanced technology has made it possible for us to experience the latest electronic devices that are being designed and introduced to the market at a rapid rate. The desktop computer enjoyed quite a long spell of popularity but now it seems almost obsolete because of the various other equipment that can do the same work but in a much more convenient way. When the laptop was first introduced to the world, there were many that bought it not only because of its portability factor but also because it was considered the symbol of an up and coming professional in the world of business.
The laptop has many versions to it as a result of different manufacturers producing their own machines. Someone buying a laptop for the first time however might feel rather confused; and therefore its worth having some knowledge of the basics of this useful device before stepping into a store. A laptop is not that different from a desktop PC except for its size which is one of the main reasons for its popularity. Its comparatively small size and light weight makes it easy to be carried around while it can also perform most of the tasks done by a PC but at a lesser level.
What is most important when buying a laptop is to consider the needs of the user and for what purpose he or she will be using it most? For a person that travels a lot it would be a handy device to have. A typical laptop will not weigh more than four to five pounds and will consist of a screen that is around 12-14" wide. But there are laptops that are larger in size and with screens up to 17" which are not for lugging around but specifically to keep for your office or home work. A larger laptop with its wide screen is always easier on the eyes and is best for someone who uses his computer continuously. Such a device will also have additional memory which is essential for someone making Power Point presentations, creating graphics or gaming in a big way.
Gamers usually prefer laptops that are large in size and therefore come with a larger hard drive and a memory capacity of at least 512MB, extra RAM, a powerful graphics card and sound card if necessary. Such laptops will also have additional USB ports and slots for peripherals to be used if required. They also have with widescreen displays and networking capabilities. Furthermore, Power hungry computer games require a lot of additional power, and a gaming laptop should be capable of meeting these demands as well.
Another noticeable difference in the laptop is its keyboard which is integrated into the device and a touch pad that helps to move the curser on the screen instead of the traditional mouse. The latest laptops available in the market today are capable of performing various functions and are extremely sleek and trendy making them very pleasing to the eye and looking nothing short of a work of art. One big disadvantage of the laptop is its limited upgradeability factor apart from which its battery life is considered low. All in all however, the laptop is a coveted device that is used by a majority of computer users today and its advantages far out weigh whatever negative features it has.
